Now that 2025 tax returns have been filed, let's review what we did wrong with OBBBA changes. More importantly, let's discover how we can fix those mistakes.
Full Description »
Session Description
2025 tax returns were the guinea pig for new OBBBA deductions: tips, overtime, senior, car interest, the new SALT limit, and a host of other changes. This first year, like the first pancake off the griddle, is never quite right. Did the IRS reject a return for an invalid SSN? Or an incorrect calculation? Or a wildly inaccurate estimate of tips or overtime? Maybe there should have been a change in accounting method or an election on the return? We will identify the first-year mistakes and learn the best paths for corrections. Pass the syrup, please.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the most common errors on 2025 tax returns caused by OBBBA changes.
- Review the OBBBA elections available for the first time on 2025 returns.
- Learn how (and when) to fix missed or incorrect new OBBBA deductions.
- Review best practices for getting it right next year - the second pancake.

- Interpret applicable information from K-1 packages, including supplemental schedules and state allocations.
- Calculate basis adjustments and report gains or losses, including items of ordinary income, from the disposition of a PTP.
- Determine how passive activity loss limitations apply to PTP's and when suspended losses are released.

This session walks through the hidden costs, traps, and red flags that can turn a "tax-savings" S election into an expensive compliance headache. We'll compare Schedule C, partnership, C-corp, and S-corp outcomes so you can confidently tell clients when to elect S status - and when to walk away.
Full Description »
Session Description
This program teaches tax professionals how to identify when an S corporation election fails to deliver a net tax benefit. Using numerical comparisons and real-world case studies, we examine the break-even point for S-corp planning, weighing self-employment tax savings against payroll, accounting, and return preparation costs. Topics include reasonable compensation and fringe benefits, health insurance and auto reporting, QBI/§199A trade-offs, PTET elections, state minimum and franchise taxes, basis and loss limitations, and distribution planning. Practitioners will learn a practical decision framework to determine when S status is advantageous, when it is neutral, and when it clearly hurts the client.
Learning Objectives
- Identify key indicators that an S-corporation structure is suboptimal.
- Evaluate reasonable compensation, shareholder health insurance, and personal-use auto rules as part of the true "total cost of ownership" for S-corporations.
- Analyze how basis, loss limitations, and distributions affect shareholder outcomes and can turn an S election into a disadvantage.
- Apply a structured checklist to advise clients on when to elect, maintain, or unwind S-corporation status.
