New Online Identity Verification Process for IRS Self-Help Tools

IRS has launched an improved identity verification and sign-in process utilizing ID.me, for securely accessing and using its online tools and applications. Taxpayers using the new verification procedure can gain access to:

  • Child Tax Credit Update Portal;
  • Get an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN);
  • Get Transcript Online;
  • Online Account; and
  • Online Payment Agreement.
Anyone who already has an ID.me account from the Child Tax Credit Update Portal or from another government agency can sign in with their existing credentials. New users must provide a photo of an identity document such as a driver's license or state ID. They'll also need to take a selfie with a smartphone or a computer with a webcam.

IRS has also integrated this new account-creation process into some applications for tax pros, including those used to request powers of attorney or tax information authorizations online. Learn more from the news release and the Fact Sheet
