How to Become an Enrolled Agent

To become an EA, you need to pass a comprehensive three-part exam that tests your knowledge of tax law and processes. This exam, known as the Special Enrollment Exam, or SEE, covers 1) taxation of individuals, 2) taxation of businesses, and 3) representation, practice & procedures. Participants must pass each of the three parts to earn their license. The following is a comprehensive step-by-step road map to becoming an EA:

Obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). If you already have a PTIN, make certain it is current. If you do not have a PTIN, obtain one right away. If you have a Social Security number, all you have to do is fill out a quick online application with the IRS using the IRS Tax Professional PTIN System, and pay a non-refundable fee of $35.95.

Study for the Special Enrollment Exam (SEE). Our EA Exam Preparation classes are just what you need to prepare for, take - and more importantly - pass - the SEE! We offer a comprehensive review of the tax laws and procedures for each part, taught by experienced Enrolled Agents who work in the tax profession.

Schedule your SEE Exam. Administered by Prometric, exams are offered between May 1 and February 28 each year. You will need to schedule your 3 test dates, pay a fee of $203 for each part and travel to the nearest testing location. You must pass all 3 parts within 2 years.

Apply for EA Enrollment. After you have passed all three parts of the SEE, enroll online at pay.gov, submit Form 23, and pay the non-refundable application fee of $67.

Pass a Suitability Check. After you apply for enrollment, the IRS will run a check to confirm you’ve filed your tax returns and paid any outstanding taxes. They’ll also run a background check for criminal records.
