12/18/17 — On Saturday, February 3, 2018 CSEA Chapter Members throughout the state will be setting up tables in libraries, coffee shops, civic centers and other venues where they can greet taxpayers and answer their tax questions.  This is a public service/public awareness event, just one of the many efforts by CSEA Members to help raise awareness about Enrolled Agents.  The benefit for taxpayers is having EAs answer tax questions for free, no strings attached.  The benefit for EA volunteers is the opportunity to get together with their fellow Chapter Members and share the experience with each other and with the public.

Tax Help Day takes place at the very beginning of tax season, when taxpayers are starting to think about their taxes and realizing that they have questions.  Many do not use professional preparers like Enrolled Agents, and are glad for the help.  The timing for us is not ideal – we would much rather work on the tax returns that are already piling up in our office! However, Tax Help Day really is an opportunity to be of service to taxpayers who might not have access to a tax expert. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to support our designation, Enrolled Agent.

We continually battle to have more people know who we are and what we do, but it is very difficult.  Tax Help Day is such a great opportunity to have many people see the words “Enrolled Agent.” Even if they don’t ask a tax question, they still see the name and wonder who we are.  We can greet them as they walk by, hand them a brochure, and get the thought process started.

If your Chapter is hosting a Tax Help Day event, offer to be there for an hour or two. If they have no plans yet, see if you can motivate them to do one.  It really is a fun day for me! Any day I get to spend with a group of EAs and get my own tax questions answered, and of course help with theirs, is a great day!

It’s easy to let someone else do the work of Enrolled Agent awareness, but we really need you to help.  Enrolled Agent may never be a household word, but if we all make a little effort we can make it more recognizable.  Please consider getting involved in Tax Help Day, February 3, 2018.  I am sure you will not be disappointed. As a matter of fact, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how great it is!
