Taxpayers Receiving IRS Identity Verification Letter

IRS Stakeholder Liaison Marc Zine, CPA has informed the CSEA state office that many taxpayers are receiving 5071C Letters from the IRS asking them to verify their identities before the IRS will release their refunds.  The IRS now provides an online ID Verify system that taxpayers can use to verify their identities, available at idverify.irs.gov.  Taxpayers shouldn’t use this system unless requested by the IRS.

Taxpayers may receive a 5071C Letter when the IRS stops suspicious tax returns that have indications of being identity theft but contains a real taxpayer’s name and/or Social Security number. Only those taxpayers receiving Letter 5071C should access the online ID Verify system. The website will ask a series of questions that only the real taxpayer can answer.
