8/20/15 – The California Tax Education Council (CTEC) annual registration renewal window opens each year on August 1, with a deadline to renew of October 31. The “grace period,” which incurs a $55 late fee in addition to the $33 registration fee, is November 1 through January 15 of the following year. If a preparer does not renew by January 15 of any given year, the preparer’s registration will expire and he/she will be required to retake the 60-hour qualifying education course and register as a new preparer with CTEC.

To renew their CTEC registration, California Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) will need:

  • 20 hours of completed continuing education (10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of Federal tax law updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours of California tax law). The hours must be uploaded into the CTEC database by the education provider.
  • A valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS.
  • A current $5,000 surety bond.
