8/15/17 — CSEA Members Torie Charvez and Jean Nelsen have been recognized for their role as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) instructors for the San Francisco State University chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an international honorary and service organization for accounting students and professionals.

Beta Chi, the SFSU chapter, was honored by the IRS as the nation’s top Beta Alpha Psi VITA site at the 2017 Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting held in Anaheim in August. SFSU’s program began more than 20 years ago, with taxpayers receiving free tax return preparation by accounting students. CSEA has provided invaluable assistance over the years, with local Enrolled Agents conducting week-long training programs for student volunteers. The program has grown from 500 returns prepared in filing year 2005 to nearly 1,500 returns prepared in filing year 2016. Over 80 percent of the taxpayers helped by Beta Chi come from the local community.
