Beware of Mail from Government Imposters

Imposter scams were the top fraud category in 2023. These include scammers pretending to be a government agency such as the IRS, or your software company, or a well-known business. These imposters are now trying to scam businesses through the mail, sending fake forms and letters and demanding immediate payment.

The fake government letters have agency names that include words like United States, business regulation, and trademark to make them seem legitimate. The letters say it’s time to register or renew a business license or trademark, sending you to a website that asks for your license, Social Security, EIN, and credit card numbers. Usually, the letters warn about fines if you don’t respond quickly.

If you get a letter that looks like it’s from the government and demands money or information, it could be a scam. Learn more here, including what steps to take.
